End Of Day 2

It's the end of day two for the 2016 NARC. We ended with dog #17. We will begin with dog #18. There are about 23 more dogs left to run Series 3 Water Triple. We will run the single test dog at 7:00 am The first running dog will be at 7:10 am.

F:  made a rapid retrieve.

M: under the arc to front foot the bird.

LR: hammered it!

F: went a tad deep and turned to put his nose on it!

M: exited wide left of the gunners, made several loops around the gunners before getting into the fall area to retrieve the bird.

LR: the dog got the bird (but we could not see it)

F: nice mark!

M: got deep and left of the fall area, went out of sight then when dog reappeared he was Handled to the bird.

LR: took a good route to the fall area, hunted the area tight and hard before he was Handled to the bird.

F: drove up the hill to the left made a move to the right and got his bird.

M: exited left of the gunners hunting and cont. to go left and deep then worked over to the right-hand hillside and into the area to retrieve the bird.

LR: followed the shoreline straight to the bird. Good Job!

10. AFC Lucyana's Full Speed Ahead, "Straight," LM, Laura Parrott

F: drove deep made a quick loop to snatch up the bird.

M: arrived under the arc, got to the top of the hill, made a move to the right and retrieved his bird.

LR: made a pass on the levee, got into the next piece of water wide and right of the fall, then managed to work it out for a job well done!

The Chief Marshal, Judy Rasmuson, has informed us that they will not be running any dogs past number 22. Anyone with a number after that can go home...

Tomorrow, the test will resume with the single Test Dog at 7:00 am and the first running dog at 7:10.

We will let you know the number of the first dog to run tomorrow when we know it.

M: exited the pond on the right of the gunners, drove just a tad to deep and quickly retrieve the bird.

LR: made a couple loop shallow of the fall, went out of sight reappeared hunting his way to the bird. Good Job!

M: straight to the bird.

LR:exited the first pond on a path wide and to the right of the fall, continued angling to the right and was then Handled to the bird.

M: made one loop deep and left of the fall then turned into the area to snatch the bird up.

Pat's Perspective

The first set of water marks in a national is an animal all to itself.  In pre-national training the week prior you have been emphasizing discipline around the water. By discipline, I mean most retrieves in a weekend field trial require a dog to have a greater commitment to stay in the water.

In contrast, the first set of water marks in a national must be relatively short in time which requires short swims.  These marks tend to be very skinny and tight to the shore.

 This test like many of its kind, being too concerned can backfire.  A balanced and a relaxed state of mind is the key.  This test has taken a turn for the worse.  The dogs are having a lot of trouble on both memory birds.  Many dogs are nervous about going in tight to the flyer on the middle bird.  When they set up a hunt behind the gun they get deep and many don’t recover.   The left can be missed on the waterside if they are being too careful.  Both birds are complicated when the dogs mind is conflicted.  Balance is the key here.  

And after this test, I know I am thinking “now we have got to get our dogs ready to do a waterblind.”  This may require a change in attitude.
